If brushes make you think of paint and canvas, you're not entirely wrong – but what you might not know is that professional detailers use them to paint an exceptional shine onto their cars too. We're talking about professional detailing brushes for car care.
What role do brushes play in detailing? Why are there separate brushes for interior and exterior work? How do you choose the right ones for specific tasks? All of that and more, below.
Details make all the difference
What sets detailing apart from a regular wash is the enormous attention paid to detail. It's the sum of all those seemingly invisible details that creates the final result – and the difference that's immediately visible at first glance.
A car is full of nooks, gaps, complex shapes and recesses. Conventional methods simply can't reach every one of them – but dirt can, and does, with ease. It accumulates over months, sometimes years, and refuses to budge even with a thorough wash using a sponge or mitt. Think of places like door jambs, the boot surround, the fuel filler recess, the centre console, door pockets and air vents. You can only get in there with a brush!
Different sizes and types for different tasks
The detailing brushes in the Soft99 range are divided into interior and exterior versions. The main difference lies in the bristle type. The chemicals used for exterior work can be strong – which demands high resistance from any accessories used alongside them. That's why the exterior brushes are fitted with synthetic bristles. These are slightly stiffer, more effective at tackling stubborn dirt, and unaffected by harsh chemicals.

Interior work is a different matter. Here we've opted for brushes with soft natural bristles, which are safe for delicate surfaces. The products used inside the car – such as Wash Mist – are also less aggressive.
Brush size is another important consideration. Soft99 offers three sizes: 16 mm, 24 mm and 30 mm – these measurements refer to the diameter of the working part (the bristle head). This makes it easy to choose the right brush for the area you'll be working on. The smallest (16 mm) is ideal for narrow gaps and tight spots where precision is key – such as seat runners or air vents. The medium (24 mm) is the most versatile and will handle the majority of tasks. The large (30 mm) is the best option for working on bigger surfaces such as tyres, wheels or the dashboard.
Ergonomics and durability matter too
Detailing brushes come into contact with chemicals and water, so they need to be resistant to both. They also need to withstand many cycles of use. A plastic handle won't be fazed by any of this, and everyday dirt won't work its way into its surface. The handle is also shaped to sit comfortably in the hand and allow precise work. A dedicated hanging hole at the end of the handle means it always has a home once the job is done.

You'll also notice that the interior and exterior brushes are colour-coded. Interior brushes are red, while exterior brushes are black – so you'll never mix them up and they'll always be used for their intended purpose.
